Pelham library hosting upcoming events for adults

10/31/2017  The Pelham Public Library is hosting six events for adults from October through December of 2017.

PELHAM – The Pelham Public Library is hosting several programs, events and classes for adults throughout the remainder of 2017.

The Understanding Medicare Seminar is set for Thursday, Oct. 19 and Thursday, Nov. 16 at 10:30 a.m. Smith said the seminars are provided by a Medicare advisor from Physicians Mutual and are intended to help simplify complex aspects of Medicare, including different parts and enrollment.

“Hundreds age into Medicare each month in this area. It is a complex and confusing process for most individuals,” Pelham Public Library Adult Services Coordinator David Smith said.

The library’s Shred Event and Donation Drive will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. Smith said the event will give community members peace of mind and protection from identity theft by giving them the opportunity to shred confidential documents. Smith said individuals are limited to six boxes, and household garbade, glass, metal, CDs and DVDs cannot be accepted. Smith encouraged patrons to donate to the Pelham Library Building Fund.

“From drop off to destruction, all documents will be closely monitored and protected,” Smith said.

“Forgotten Alabama” and “Forgotten Alabama 2” author and photographer Glenn Wills’s is scheduled to give a presentation at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4. The event will also double as a book signing, and his books will be available for purchase. Seating for the event is limited and requires reservations.

“Mr. Wills traveled thousands of miles and every county in Alabama, capturing these places on film and sharing his experiences,” Smith said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to hear his story and see a presentation of his work.”

The library will help patrons hunt for a job or develop job-seeking skills at the AARP Job Search in the Digital Age workshops on Tuesday, Nov. 14. Smith said the first workshop starts at 10 a.m. and will cover job search websites and interview skills for those who are looking for a new job or trying to switch careers. The second workshop, set for 1 p.m., will focus on networking and interview skills. The library will provide light refreshments. Patrons are required to register for both workshops online at Aarp.cvent.com/jobsbirm.

“These hands-on workshops will provide important tips on how to network and get noticed by hiring managers,” Smith said.

Community members will be able to hear from local resident Davis Grimes about his travels on the Appalachian Trail at the Exploring the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails event on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 2 to 3 :30 p.m.

“With little physical preparation and minimum provisions, Mr. Grimes walked over 2,000 miles in just 132 days,” Grimes said. “The success rate is small, about 20 percent of hikers who begin the trail will even complete it. Mr. Grimes averaged 18 miles a day and sometimes walked up to 40 miles a day.”

According to Smith, all of the upcoming events are free. Event reservations and general information can be found by calling the library at 620-6418.
