The Monumental, the Mundane and the Macabre: Discovering 19th-Century Life in Alabama Letters and Diaries

Frommatters of love, death and politics, to the price of shoes, nineteenth centuryAlabamians recorded their experiences in letters and diaries. This talkexplores life in the 1800s through personal writings now preserved in theBirmingham Public Library Archives. Speaker Jim Baggett is Head of theDepartment of Archives and Manuscripts at the Birmingham Public Library andArchivist for the City of Birmingham. He has served as president of the Societyof Alabama Archivists, Chair of the Jefferson County Historical Commission, andas a trustee for several historical associations. Jim has lectured throughoutthe U.S. and in Europe and has been featured on Alabama Public Television,Alabama Public Radio, National Public Radio, and C-SPAN. He has authored twobooks on Alabama history, edited three others, and has written more than fiftyarticles. Come join us for a fascinating look at Alabama’s past.
